Angioplasty

When experiencing chest pain or heart attack, it is vital that the patient receives the right medical treatment fast. Terre Haute Regional Hospital provides treatment for chest pain (angina) or heart attack by offering angioplasty. Angioplasty is a non-surgical treatment designed to restore the blood flow through coronary arteries that have been blocked or clogged by plaque or a blood clot.

Balloon angioplasty is a procedure where the area of the vessel blockage widens with the use of a special balloon. A catheter with a tiny balloon is inserted into the femoral artery—sometimes the radial artery is used—usually through the groin area, and guided through the arterial system into the heart. The balloon gently inflates to open the blockage, then a stent may be inserted to keep the artery permanently open. Studies show heart attack survival rates greatly improve when treated with this kind of coronary angioplasty.

Services we offer

Patients who utilize the chest pain center at Terre Haute have access to a complete range of cardiac care including diagnostic and interventional procedures such as angioplasty, pacemaker implantation, electrophysiology studies and cardiac ablation. Our other services include:

  • Cardiac ablation
  • Cardiac rehabilitation
  • Pediatric cardiology
  • Heart devices
  • Heart and vascular surgery
  • Heart failure
  • Electrophysiology studies

Heart and vascular surgery

The beating heart surgical technique performed at Terre Haute Regional Hospital makes it possible for a cardiovascular surgeon to perform a bypass without stopping the heart or placing the patient on a heart-lung machine. Patients benefit from fewer blood transfusions, a decreased risk of stroke and a shorter hospital stay.

Cardiac catheterization

This is a procedure used to measure blood pressure within the heart, how much oxygen is in the blood and the pumping ability of the heart muscle. A thin plastic catheter is inserted into an artery or vein, then advanced into the chambers of the heart or coronary arteries. Our specialists are able to obtain high-resolution images in our cath lab to better understand your health.

What is heart arrhythmia?

Heart arrhythmia is an irregular heartbeat meaning the heart is beating too fast, too slow or in a contorted rhythm.

Types of heart arrhythmias

Heart arrhythmias are classified by where they originate in the heart and the heartbeat speed. Heart arrhythmias can originate in the atria or ventricles.

A combination of a fast or slow heartbeat and where it is located in the heart results in a number of conditions, including:

  • Tachycardias in the atria—includes atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome
  • Tachycardias in the ventricles—includes ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation and Long QT syndrome
  • Bradycardias—includes sick sinus syndrome and conduction block

Arrhythmia symptoms

Noticeable signs of heart arrhythmia do not indicate a serious health or heart issue. However, it is important that you keep track of your symptoms. Some symptoms include:

  • Racing heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Slow heartbeat (bradycardia)
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Sweating
  • Fainting spells
